Resolving flows in space and time
The Fluids and Imaging Innovation Lab builds experimental tools for measuring turbulence, cardiovascular flow, and high-speed jets at the University of Toledo.
Fluid motion decides how blood loads an arterial wall, how drag builds along a surface, and how a jet mixes with the air around it. In each case the physics happens at scales and speeds that ordinary instruments cannot follow.

Current research
Three connected lines of work, each combining measurement hardware, imaging, and analysis.
Cardiovascular flow
Time-resolved measurements in patient-derived aorta and aneurysm models, combining 4D flow MRI with optical velocimetry to link hemodynamics to disease progression.
Wall-bounded turbulence
Near-wall structure in pipe and boundary-layer flows at high Reynolds number, including particle-laden turbulence and the measurement of wall shear stress.
Flow diagnostics
Developing the instruments themselves: tomographic PIV and particle tracking, digital holography, background-oriented schlieren, and interferometric wall sensors.

Omid Amili leads the Fluids and Imaging Innovation Lab, where he develops hardware and software platforms for advanced flow diagnostics in complex environments. His work spans wall-bounded turbulence, supersonic jet flows, particle-laden flows, and cardiovascular hemodynamics.
